Buying furniture pieces at yard sales offers many options, but you must look closely to know what you're getting.
Are you interested in trying your hand at some creative furniture painting? If you don't already have an old piece of furniture to practice on, shopping yard sales is the best way to come up with a piece.
If you are buying the yard sale furniture for the sake of practicing your creative idea, buy away! If you are looking for a particular piece to use, take time to look the furniture over to make sure you are getting a solid piece at a good deal.
For instance, if you want to buy a small dresser for a guest room and want to give it a country look, your first concern should be the stability of the furniture. You can give almost any style the look you want, as long as the furniture is sturdy and in good condition. Look to see if any of the wood is buckling or if the piece has any deep scratches that can't be sanded out. If you want it to have an old look, the scratches might not matter so much to you. The buckling, however, might be a sign of warped drawers that are hard to open or close. Warped furniture is not usually very functional.
If the furniture you are looking at is a sofa, loveseat or chair there are additional considerations you should keep in mind. Will you be using the furniture as it is or do you plan to give it a fresh coat of paint or some new fabric treatment? Does it look clean? Ask the seller if the furniture has been used recently in a home or if it has been in storage. If it has been stored, ask if the storage unit was climate controlled. If not, you may find yourself dealing with pest issues or mold down the line. Make sure you look the seating over good - check out its frame, springs, cushions and the over all wear. If you think it is in good shape and can get a good deal, go for it!
If you are taking up furniture shopping through yard sales as a hobby, learn all you can about various types of furniture. The knowledge will help you separate a good deal from a great find. Customer Review: It can't be replaced!!!
I bought this book over a year ago. I've read through each project a dozen times. I love about 94% of them. Our house sits on a lot that is ~ 100 feet x ~ 120 feet. I was going to get crazy this spring and summer with a new patio, arbor, and several garden areas.
Sometime a couple of months ago, my book disappeared. I have searched nearly every square inch of our attic and basement, in addition to every closet, underneath every bed, and even in the garage. My wife has looked as well, but to no avail.
I'm 32 years old, and losing this book has nearly made me cry on at least four occassions. It's that good.
Our library doesn't have it. None of the hardware stores in town have it. We have one bookstore in town - and they don't have it. Last weekend, I finally broke down and bought two other books, thinking that by doubling up it would somehow take away the pain of losing my B&D Creative Landscapes book.
It hasn't worked.
I'm purchasing another copy on line this afternoon. There are just too many things in the book that I can't find anywhere else. It's nothing that difficult, but they do such a great job of making things easy to follow, and each project gives you ideas for three more.
Buy the book. Buy two copies. And be sure to hide one in your drawer where no one can take it.

These mounts are a good idea for small speakers, but do not attempt to hang a speaker approaching the rated weight. My 8 lb speakers will NOT stay in place no matter how much you tighten the set screw. The ball will just not hold. I will need to buy something else for my purposes.

This mobile isn't the loveliest to the adult eye, but my newborn adores it. When nothing else works to entertain her, she will watch and listen to this. In fact, some of her first gurgling and cooing was to this mobile. And it gives her parents a 15-minute break to shower, answer email, or eat! We love it.

We bought this mobile for my daughter when she was 3 weeks old...it took a week or so for her to get used to it, but now it is one of her FAVORITE toys. We do not use this to settle her down for naptime, but rather start the mobile first thing in the AM (as a matter of fact, we'll walk into the nursery in the morning and she'll be sitting in her crib waving her arms and waiting for the mobile to start) OR during the afternoon when she has some extra energy. This mobile can entertain her for 30-45 minutes. She loves to kick the animals as they rotate on the mobile - great for hand-foot coordination development! Highly recommended!

Cats have a natural instinct that will lead them to climb and scratch. If you are not providing the proper tools for the cat to use, they will use what they can find to scratch. For most, the times it will be furniture, drapes, counter tops or any thing that they can scratch.
Why does a cat need to scratch? Scratching is an enjoyable activity that a cat likes to do. Helps remove old layers of nails on the cat's claws. Cats do scratching also to mark their territories in the home, so if there are other animals or cats in the house that is a way of telling them this is their area.
Lets look at what can we do to help the cat learn good behaviors for scathing. First, do not spray a cat if they are scratching on the counter as they will jump off, run, and think it is a game. Providing a scratching pole or tree for the cat would be the best solution. With a scratching post, they are able to do this and not have your furniture ruin. There are many different types of scratching post on the market to get for the cat. Some are standing alone with carpeting on them to deluxe kind that the cat can scratch and climb with cubbyholes for them to nest in, nap, or hide.
Also when purchasing a pole or tree for the cat, watch the carpeting on them as the cat will hook their claws on the loop if that is the type of carpeting that is on there. Teaching a cat to scratch on a pole or tree does not come easy. You will have to show the cat what the pole is for and what options that can do on it. You yourself will have to scratch at the pole to show them that this is ok to do there.
Providing good playtime with a cat with the pole will show the cat that they are able to use this. With rewarding the cat with a massage or healthy treat when they do use the pole. This will let the cat know that the behavior is acceptable.
Another thing that you could consider to help a cat not to scratch at your furniture is wrap the furniture in aluminum foil. Cats do not like the feel or the touch of aluminum foil. Putting netting or some type of woven fabric over it can help also, as cats do not like to snag their claws.
Making an environment when the cat is at home its self is a good idea to do, especially if they are still scratching at furniture, climbing the drapes or jumping on and off the counters and tables. This way you know the cat is safe and they can learn that they have to use only the items that you allow them to play with when you are gone or when you are at home.
The environment should contain the only items that the cat able to play with. Scathing pole, toys, strings, balls, most important cat litter dish. One thing we do not want to forget is do not leave the water or the food out for the cat to get too as they will need to use the litter box and if you have not trained them yet you could have a surprises when you get home.
Cutting the cat claws to a proper length is another thing that will help. Cutting them to much down to the pink area will hurt the cat and could cause them to get infection. There are plenty of trained pet groomers to do this for a very small reasonable charge. You could ask the vet for a good groomer in your area. Keeping the cat healthy is another important step to help training your cat,

For some reason, my customer's desire to fit a TV into an armoire wasn't the Amish could readily related to--although they were still more than happy to oblige by modifying their design to meet our specifications.
A Natural Fit to the Great Outdoors
Rustic wood furniture is just a natural fit to an outdoor environment. It seems so much more relaxing than patio furniture made from plastic, composite or other materials. Many log furniture manufacturers use treetops of logs cut for log cabins, so even if you feel like "saving a tree" you are enhancing--rather than hurting--the environment by furnishing your patio, deck, or gazebo with rustic outdoor furniture.

i wanted a caddy to make my pc wiring more accessible, and i wanted it as sleek as possible, so as not to destroy the aesthetic of my workspace. the allsop did the trick. it's easy to assemble & lightweight too! my one complaint (a tiny one at that) is that the caddy in the photo appears to be brushed chrome, while mine is closer to filing cabinet grey-brown. all in all though, a great item.

I have a Dell XPS tower that takes up loads of desk space. I wanted to place it on the floor but was afraid the case would be full of cat hair and dust in weeks. This cart solves my problem perfectly as it raises the case about 3' off the floor and allows me to easily slide the computer out of the way. And the casters allow me to easily swivel the case when I need to access the connections on the back.
